The Basilica of Sant’ Eustorgio is one of the most important churches in Milan and holds a mysterious secret: the Madonna with horns. Rather than blasphemy, the fresco by Vincenzo Foppa depicts the legend of St Peter of Verona, born Pietro Rosini celebrating Mass. While doing this he realised that the devil had penetrated an icon of Mary. Peter held a consecrated host between his fingers while the exorcism was in progress but, according to the legend, our Lady was left with Lucifer’s horns.
